Taiwan's cost of living is relatively affordable compared to other East Asian countries. The country is famous for its delicious street food, stunning landscapes, and friendly locals. Students can enjoy a range of activities, from hiking in the picturesque mountains to experiencing the bustling night markets. Taiwan also has a well-developed public transportation system, making it easy to travel around the island and explore its diverse regions.

The University of Helsinki offers exchange opportunities at the following universities in Taiwan:

  • For students of all faculties: National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University
  • Students of specific Faculties: Kaohsiung Medical University (Faculty of Pharmacy), National Taiwan Normal University (Faculty of Arts)

Who can apply?

  • Students of all faculties
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s students
  • Students with English skills at least on level B2
  • Students with minimum GPA of 3,8 

Faculties not open to exchange students

  • International College, School of Political Science and Economics, D-School, and Center for General Education are not open for exchange students.
  • The College of Medicine prefers 1st-year and 2nd-year undergraduate students with high-level Chinese proficiency, but exchange students cannot enroll in the Department of Dentistry.

What can you study here?

  • Information on courses
  • National Taiwan University (NTU) has hosted exchange students focusing on a number of disciplines, including medicine and veterinary medicine.
  • It is possible to receive credits for lab work in addition to course participation.
  • Exchange students can enroll in NTU General and Enhancing Chinese Courses. Exchange students cannot study Chinese as a foreign language on a full-time basis.

Minimum 13 credits per termThe target is 15 credits per term.
1 National Taiwan University credit = 2 ECTS.

On-campus housing is open for application but not guaranteed to all exchange students. 

Other important matters

  • The target university has imposed some limitations on Chinese citizens applying for exchange. Chinese citizens may apply for exchange for only one semester. Students with only Taiwanese nationality are not eligible.
  • Students may be offered to apply for a MOFA Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship in addition to University of Helsinki’s mobility grant, if the host university opens the application. University of Helsinki nominates students based on GPA.

What can you study here?

  • Information on courses
  • Students should apply to departments related to their academic background and review the courses to ensure they align with their prior studies. Some departments only host Master level students.
  • Students may take both undergraduate and graduate courses (requires approval of the course instructor). Students are allowed to take courses from both campuses as long as there is no time conflict with the class schedule.
  • National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) is especially recommended for students of science and life sciences. In addition to science and life sciences, there are courses taught in English available in social sciences and humanities.
  • Exchange students can enroll in Mandarin courses. Exchange students cannot study Chinese as a foreign language on a full-time basis.
